Babe, wake up, it’s time for Saturday Night Live’s yearly John Mulaney musical. This year, the quest is simple but absurdly high-stakes: Pete Davidson’s just trying to buy milk at a Duane Reade inside the NYC Port Authority bus terminal. (Yes, the very one.)
If you’ve been following the now six-year-long saga with Mulaney, Davidson, and Chris Redd (who did not appear, sadly) — you know the drill. Together with the cast, they’ve taken us through New York’s strangest social faux pas, from ordering lobster at a diner to trying to buy sushi at La Guardia Airport.
You can tell Mulaney is just a giant nerd about two things: New York City and Musicals. You can almost feel the inner theater kid beaming with pride as he dives into elaborate homages to The Lion King, Les Misérables, Grease, and even Cabaret.
It’s pure, unapologetic Broadway geekery. It’s also hilariously self-indulgent, and we’re absolutely here for it.
