Windsor-Essex public school board trustees approved a plan Tuesday night to cut 63 positions, eliminate the RISE special education program and cut the international baccalaureate programs.
The move came after the provincial government told the Greater Essex County District School Board to eliminate its $6.4 million deficit by the 2026-27 school year.
Six people spoke as delegations before the vote urging trustees to keep the RISE program and a seventh spoke in favour of keeping the international baccalaureate program.
But rejecting the cuts risked having the province take over the school board operations which some trustees felt would put the bord in a worse position.
The financial plan must be submitted to the Education Ministry by Nov. 30.
