Canada-bound traffic at the Ambassador Bridge was halted for several hours Saturday after a tragic incident involving a Canada Border Services Agency officer.
In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Windsor police said officers were on scene at the Ambassador Bridge for “an ongoing investigation.”
Traffic to Canada was rerouted to the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel.

In a joint statement Saturday evening, the Public Service Alliance of Canada and Customs and Immigration Union said a border officer “took their life at work” in Windsor.
“PSAC and the Customs and Immigration Union are aware of the tragic incident that took place,” the statement read. “Incidents such as this one bring to light the challenges public safety personnel may be confronted with throughout their career.
“They remind us of the need for a comprehensive mental health support structure and of the importance of taking down barriers to access these services, both in professional and private settings.”
Officers and a forensic investigation vehicle were stationed around the secondary inspection area, cordoned off with yellow police tape, from around 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Shortly after 3 p.m., the Detroit-to-Windsor lanes of the bridge had reopened.
“We are very saddened of the passing today of a CBSA employee working at the Ambassador Bridge,” CBSA spokesperson Karine Martel told the Windsor Star. “Our deepest thoughts and sympathies are with the family, friends, and colleagues of a respected member of the CBSA community who worked in the southern Ontario region.
“Out of respect for loved ones, no further information will be shared.”

Traffic to the United States was not affected by the investigation.
