On Nov. 19, the Jackson County Educator Retirees Association recognized retired teachers at its meeting on Retired Teachers Day. The meeting was held at the Scottsboro Depot Museum.
Prior to the recognition, Toni McGriff opened the meeting with a discussion about the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday and the subject of thankfulness. This discussion set the tone for the recognition of the retired teachers as it was done out of the spirit of thankfulness.
Retired Teachers Day was picked to be celebrated on the Tues. of American Education Week each year. This year, Bill Nance, Chairman of the Jackson County Commission, attended to present the JCERA with a special resolution which recognized all of the retired teachers for all of their hard work.
Nance opened by thanking the retired teachers for all of their hard work. Then he shared stories of how teachers’ caring hearts touched him and how much he cherished them.
Nance then read the Resolution 2425 from the Jackson County Commission.
“Whereas public education is the foundation of our society, it is the most critical element in the progress and the enlightenment of our state and nation and whereas, the public educators in our education system have carried the torch of knowledge, opening doors to the challenge and excitement of learning from countless years and whereas, public educators, because of their deep and abiding love of children, have displayed a commitment to their students and dedication to their professions and whereas, our state’s retired public educators have served long careers unwavering throughout their tenure to educate our state’s school children and whereas, retired public educators throughout Alabama are deserving of the highest praise and recognition our state can bestow to their devotion of their professions. Now therefore be it resolved that the Commission of Jackson County thus hereby proclaim Nov. 19, 2024, as Retired Teachers Day in the county and encourages all citizens to go in together to pay tribute to the retired public educators,” he said.
Nance then thanked the teachers for their service.
After the recognition, the JCERA held its regular meeting. Ken Looney, the guest speaker, spoke at the meeting about estate planning, wills, trusts and other end-of-life administrative tasks necessary to make things easier for loved ones left behind.
After Looney spoke, the group discussed Medicaid, PHIP and health insurance issues facing retired teachers.
