- Emberstoria is releasing tomorrow, the 27th of November, in Japan
- It sees a world called Purgatory where humanity resurrects warriors known as Embers to fight monsters
- But could a global release be quite as straightforward, or even possible?
Square Enix fans will be watching Japan with envy as a new regional-exclusive mobile release hits storefronts on November 27th, with strategy RPG Emberstoria now open for pre-download. Emberstoria, as we covered previously, sees the world of Purgatory reviving ancient warriors known as Embers to take on the monsters that threaten the planet.
In the nicest possible way, it’s classic Square Enix with a big, bombastic, almost melodramatic storyline and sense of presentation, alongside some very nice art. Recruiting diverse Embers, building up your own flying city of Anima Arca and experiencing a dramatic story with over 40 voice actors. And while it may be initially disappointing that it’s not set to come to the West yet, I’m sure there’s plenty of anticipation for when it does.
However, I do have a slightly more measured perspective. If you’ll recall earlier today I covered that Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent would be transferring operations to Netease, and I posited that Square Enix might be taking a step back from mobile.
So you were wrong?
Well, I wouldn’t say that. But I do think this could indicate what Square is up to in the near future, and Emberstoria is one to keep an eye on. Maybe it’ll remain Japan-exclusive, or maybe it’ll come to us courtesy of NetEase? Either way, I don’t reckon a global release will be straightforward, but not impossible either, and how it comes about could tell us a lot about what Square Enix is up to on mobile in future.
Japan certainly has plenty of weird and wonderful releases we scarcely get to see overseas. And it’s no different for mobile! If you’re feeling envious, why not dig into our list of the best Japanese mobile games that we wish we could see come to the rest of the world?
