Longtime ABC News Breakfast host Michael Rowland has announced his departure from the TV program after almost 15 years.
“I’m sorry to the viewers out there for the short notice, I’m not one for long and drawn out farewells, I wanted minimal fuss,” Rowland told viewers this morning.
Rowland’s last day on the program will be December 13. He will remain at the public broadcaster.
Rowland, who has worked at the ABC for more than 35 years, has co-hosted News Breakfast since 2010. He has also helmed coverage of major global events for the broadcaster, including this year’s US election.
Rowland’s former co-host, Lisa Millar, left the program earlier this year before being replaced by Bridget Brennan.
Brennan said she and the program’s viewers would be “very saddened by this news”.
“Millions of Australians wake up with you each day and you are a calm and caring and steady person to wake up to each and every morning and it’s been a privilege to sit next to you,” Brennan said.
“We’ve had so much fun and you are a true leader of the ABC and a very loved colleague.”
In an Instagram post minutes after the announcement, Rowland said the move was “not a decision I’ve taken lightly”.
“It has been an immense privilege to have been on your screens every morning, bringing you the latest news. This, to me, has always been the most important part of the job,” he wrote.
“Thank you for trusting me with your mornings over so many years. Thank you for all the lovely letters, emails, and social media messages. Thank you for the countless happy greetings, handshakes and hugs in cities and towns around Australia.
“This is what has kept me going more than anything else. I am just so proud of the audience I have helped build over the years.”
Rowland will return to the ABC in mid-2025. His replacement has not yet been announced.
