It took a shootout for a winner to be declared in Saturday’s Western Hockey League game between the Saskatoon Blades and visiting Swift Current Broncos, but the hometown team was able to claim a 4-3 victory.

The two teams exchanged goals throughout the game, with each team scoring once per period.
David Lewandowski scored for the Blades in the first and second period, while Jordan Martin scored with 7:02 remaining on the clock in the third period to tie the game at three and force the eventual overtime and shootout.

Evan Gardner made 19 saves on 22 shots in Saskatoon’s net, while across the ice, Swift Current’s Joey Rocha stopped 29 of 32.
The Blades were also at home on Friday night, taking on the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
After a scoreless first period, Brandon Lisowsky and Rowan Calvert scored for the Blades in the second, while Lukas Hansen and Zach Olsen both recorded goals in the third period.
The final goal of the game belonged to the Hurricanes, preventing Gardner from recording the shutout, as he made 30 saves on 31 shots on Diabetes Night. Lethbridge’s Brady Smith stopped 34 of the 38 shots he faced.
Saskatoon continues to hold onto first place in the WHL Eastern Conference, with a 17-6-1-1 record. The Blades will return to action on Wednesday when they host the Red Deer Rebels. Game-time is 7 p.m.
