A retail plaza located across the road from Essex District High School will feature a variety new restaurants, including a Wendy’s, City Pizza, Osmow’s Shawarma, Stacked Pancakes and Breakfast House, and Mary Brown’s Chicken.
The location was so popular with the restaurants that it “actually leased faster than any project I’ve ever been involved with,” said John Knifton, owner of JK Development, which developed the property, during a groundbreaking ceremony Dec. 6. on Talbot Street North. Located across the high school, he said almost 100 per cent of the location is leased.

Mayor Sherry Bondy called the project a “significant step forward for our community, as it will bring a dynamic mix of quick-service restaurants to our area, serving both residents and visitors alike.
“This new plaza is more than just a collection of business; it represents continued growth and revitalization of Essex Centre. The development will help to strengthen our local economy, create new jobs and enhance the vibrancy of our town,” Bondy said.
Wendy’s franchisee Amarjit Singh said the restaurant will employ about 60 people and is expected to open in March.
“Wendy’s is looking to open in our rural areas, especially areas like Essex and Lakeshore,” said Singh, noting Essex’s fast rate of development in the past few years.
Company plans also call for new Wendy’s outlets in Kingsville and Belle River, he said.
