The nominations for the 82nd Golden Globes were announced on Monday by actor and comedian Mindy Kaling and actor Morris Chestnut.
Among the Canadian nominees are Pamela Anderson, who was nominated in the best actress in a drama category for her performance in The Last Showgirl; Gabriel LaBelle, who was recognized in the best actor in a musical or comedy category for his performance in Saturday Night; Martin Short, nominated for the best actor in a television series musical or comedy for Only Murders in the Building; and director Denis Villeneuve, whose Dune: Part Two is up for best motion picture – drama.
The embattled Globes, which are no longer presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association — the voting group that faced controversy over ethical lapses and a lack of diversity — are still in comeback mode after years of scandal and organizational upheaval.
Emilia Pérez leads the way
Jacques Audiard’s musical Emilia Pérez, about a Mexican drug lord who undergoes gender affirming surgery, led the way with 10 nominations, over other contenders like the musical smash Wicked, the papal thriller Conclave, which received six nominations, and the post-war epic The Brutalist, which received seven nods.
Standout body-horror film The Substance also did well, racking up five nominations, including one for best motion picture – musical or comedy.
Among TV categories, The Bear leads with five nominations while Only Murders in the Building and Shogun each had four.
The awards show will air Jan. 5 on CBS and can be streamed on Paramount+.
