The NFL playoff field has begun filling as teams started clinching berths in Week 13. The Detroit Lions joined the field when they held off the Green Bay Packers on Thursday Night Football. Only one other game this weekend featured two teams holding one of the 14 playoff spots heading into Week 14.
With eight teams in playoff position in action on Sunday, the positioning was bound to change, and it shuffled in both conferences.
The only game featuring two current playoff teams was in Minnesota, where the five seed Minnesota Vikings hosted the four seed Atlanta Falcons. The division-leading Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans are on their bye weeks along with two wild card teams in the Denver Broncos and Washington Commanders. Also on bye were the Indianapolis Colts, who are two games out of a playoff spot.

Key playoff picture takeaways in Week 14
Bengals keep slim playoff hopes alive with a MNF win
The Cincinnati Bengals pulled out a wild win on Monday night, defeating the Dallas Cowboys. It kept their slim playoff hopes alive at 5-8. They are three games behind the Los Angeles Chargers and Denver Broncos, but the Bengals play the Broncos in Week 17. Cincy is still alive, but barely.
Dallas Cowboys squeak out a loss in no-man’s land
The Cowboys played a close game with the Bengals on Monday night, and now sit at 5-8 and 12th in the NFC. They haven’t been eliminated, but they are three games back of Washington with four games to play. They are currently 12th in the 2025 NFL Draft order. They can’t lose enough to get better and can’t win enough to get into the postseason.
Chiefs win the AFC West for the ninth straight year
The Kansas City Chiefs have won their division for the ninth straight year, the second-longest streak in NFL history. The Patriots won the AFC East from 2009 to 2019, a stretch of 11 seasons.
The Los Angeles Chargers came so close to toppling Kansas City
The Chargers were inches from beating the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night, but KC got the bounce off the upright and through on the game-winning field goal try. The Chargers fall back into the group of wild card teams at 8-5, but are still two games clear of the rest of the field.
Rams pull within one game of a playoff spot with win over Bills
The Bills and Rams had an offensive showcase on Sunday, putting up a combined 86 points. The Rams came out on top and are just one game out of the wild card as well as the NFC West lead. The Bills, meanwhile, may have blown their chance at the one seed with the loss and their defense was exposed in a big way. It won’t get easier; they get the Lions next week.
Seahawks wrestle control of the NFC West race with win over Arizona
The Seattle Seahawks took a two-game lead in the NFC West with their win over the Arizona Cardinals. Seattle picked off Kyler Murray twice and Geno Smith was efficient, but the Seahawks rode Zach Charbonnet’s 22 carries for 134 yards and two touchdowns. Both touchdown runs came in the first half as the Seahawks took a 24-10 lead into halftime and milked the clock effectively in the second half.
Dolphins stun the Jets in overtime to keep playoff hopes alive
New York seemed like they were going to deal Miami a devastating blow for their playoff chances. Instead, the Dolphins stormed back and claimed an overtime win. Miami is tied with the Colts as the first team out, two games behind the three wild card teams with four to play. The loss eliminates the Jets from playoff contention.
Steelers eliminate Browns from playoff contention
The Steelers continued rolling and eliminated a rival in the process. They beat the Browns 42-21 to add a half game to their AFC North lead while the Ravens were on a bye. Pittsburgh has a two-game lead in the division and maintains pace two games back of the Chiefs for the No. 1 seed. They tied the Bills for the two seed and if they run the table, would be second at worst.
Saints keep faint playoff hopes alive
The Saints blocked a potential tying field goal for the Giants in the final minute of the game to secure a 14-11 win. New Orleans is two games back of the Bucs with four remaining and faces Tampa in Week 18.
Eagles hold off tough Panthers squad and clinch a playoff spot with help
Philly was the biggest favorite of the weekend but they had to battle against a recently surging Panthers squad. They made a defensive stop in the final minute to secure a ninth straight win. With the Commanders on a bye, the Eagles are now three games up in the NFC East with four games remaining. They remain a game back of the Lions. The Eagles entered the week needing a win and losses by the Falcons and Cardinals. All three results happened, so Philly is in the playoffs.
Bucs take over NFC South lead
The Buccaneers jumped out early on the Raiders but stumbled in the middle quarters. They held on late and that, coupled with the Falcons loss in Minnesota, means Tampa has a one-game lead in the division. The Falcons beat the Bucs in both matchups this season, so Tampa has to win the division outright to claim the playoff berth.
Vikings maintain pace in NFC North race and NFC overall
The Falcons were giving the Vikings a tough time in the first half, but Kirk Cousins fell apart and the wheels came off the defense in the second half. Minnesota maintains pace behind Detroit in the NFC North. The Vikings entered the weekend with a chance to clinch a playoff. berth with a win and losses by the Cardinals and Rams.
