The 1% Club contestants’ incorrect answer to the opening question left viewers feeling a little frustrated on the series return.
Each episode always begins with host Lee Mack asking 100 competitors a question that is considered to be the most simple one that they’ll get to face.
If they get it wrong, they are no longer qualified to continue playing, and this continues for 15 questions, which progressively get more difficult.
Their complication level is judged by putting the same questions to the public and seeing what percentage get it right. The final question is answered correctly by only 1%.
The first episode of the ITV gameshow’s four-part return got off to an interesting start when 20 contestants were almost immediately wiped out.
The opening gambit was: ‘In order to move the puppet’s left arm, does the puppeteer need to move their own left hand or right hand?’
As it was called the ‘90% question’ 90 people were predicted to get it right, but only 80 managed to crack it. The correct answer was right.
Even Lee, 56, was shocked at the amount of early exits.
‘Holy flips, we’ve lost 20 people!’ he exclaimed. ‘I don’t think we’ve ever had such a loud, “Oh my God” on the show before.’
A micro pig trainer named Scarlett explained where things went wrong for her: ‘I don’t actually know my left and right so it was just close my eyes and guess.’
After watching the events unfold, viewers took to social media to share their thoughts on the errors.
‘Right!! So embarrassing to get this wrong!!’ wrote Mark Aquilina on Instagram. Has he ever heard of a compliment sandwich?
‘Still fuming about that 90% one. There’s no way in hell that any of you have ever seen a puppet master that’s facing the complete opposite way to its puppet. No way,’ account CFSLurkerAlt123 weighed in on X.
‘Unreal that 20 got that wrong…’ added Joseph Mendy.
Sean The Mondasian Psychic would have definitely been able to not only get the answer right, but know what it was before Lee said it, and so he wasn’t impressed. ‘They lost 20 people on THAT? What literal Muppets!’ his post read.
Zee felt that Lee provided the answer when he remarked: ‘I don’t want to know what that puppeteer is trying to do with the puppet’s right hand.’
‘Lee Mack even gives away the answer with his joke about the puppet having a wank 😂,’ he typed. However a contestant called Antony Dixey revealed a behind-the-scenes secret that could explain why others didn’t pick up on it.
He explained: ‘But when filming he dose his gags after the question is done its edited like he is. I was on this episode :)’
After the rough start, the episode concluded with three contestants correctly answering the 1% question, which entitled them to a share of the final £98,000 prize pot.
They correctly answered: ‘If you double the number of times the word triple appears, how many ts would there be in this question?’ The correct answer was nine.
The 1% Club has become a beloved part of the TV schedule since it began in 2022, and has taken home the Best Quiz Game Show at the National Television Awards three times. They’ve consistently pulled in big audiences with 3.2 million viewers tuning into watch the Monday edition.
Fans have an early Christmas present as a new episode is dropping each day until Thursday this week, then there will be two 1% Club Christmas specials later this month, and a special episode in support of Soccer Aid will also air soon.
