Amazon now has over 10,000 EVs in its delivery fleet, testing long-range electric trucks

Amazon on Wednesday (December 11, 2024) announced that it has inducted over 10,000 electric vehicles (EVs) till October 2024 in its delivery fleet in India as part of its net zero and decarbonisation of entire logistics and supply chain ecosystem in India. These electric vehicles include two-wheelers, three-wheelers and even trucks. According to Amazon, these EVs are being deployed across 500 cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. Amazon is also testing long-range electric trucks for bulk delivery.

Amazon India VP Operations, Abhinav Singh said during the Amazon India Sustainability Summit 2024 in New Delhi that company wants to achieve net zero carbon emission by 2040 under its Climate Pledge commitment.

He also talked about the Amazon’s partnership with Indian Railways for shipments as it has helped the company in cutting the carbon footprint. The U.S. based e-commerce giant is also exploring the inland waterways so that it can move the bulk load more efficiently.

Amazon also displayed its long-range electric heavy trucks along the 350 km Bengaluru-Chennai highway under The Climate Pledge’s Laneshift Initiative. It claims to be the first e-commerce company to test it.

Amazon, with companies like Ashok Leyland, Billion-E, and ChargeZone, is trying to explore the potential of long-range electric freight transportation. It also plans to bring together vehicle manufacturers and charging infrastructure providers.

Amazon claims that its Climate Pledge have enabled hundreds of new jobs in India, due to collaboration with delivery service providers, fleet operators, and finance providers.

Abhinav added that as a company and as a country, we must transition to zero tailpipe emission trucks to meet India’s net-zero goals and cut reliance on diesel freight.

The logistics industry still faces limited charging infrastructure and range anxiety, and we are excited to continue to work with the government and key players in the industry to find solutions, he said.

Amazon has developed custom EVs through collaborations with leading manufacturers like Volvo Eicher, Tata Motors, Mahindra Electric, Ashok Leyland and Altigreen.

Amazon said it will continue to invest in electrifying and decarbonising its fleet, helping reduce the industry’s dependence on non-renewable resources.

Abhinav told that Amazon is also working to improve water efficiency across its operations in India, including at its fulfilment centres, corporate offices, and data centres, and add to its existing set of water replenishment projects.
