- PUBG Mobile is coming to the cloud!
- A new cloud version of the popular battle royale is now in soft launch for the US and Malaysia
- It allows you to play without downloading or running any local programs
Cloud gaming seems to be all the rage at the minute, what with being able to play at high fidelity virtually anywhere, on any device. Xbox’s new “This is an Xbox” ad campaign is a testament to that, but Krafton is taking an interesting new tack with the debut of PUBG Mobile Cloud.
A standalone download on Google Play, PUBG Mobile Cloud bills itself as a version without hardware limitations, overheating issues or, really any of the other technical limits you’d expect. At the moment it’s only in soft launch in the US and Malaysia, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it rolls out very soon for the rest of the world.
And, for those of you with a cosy rock that you’ve been living under, cloud gaming is essentially playing via a remote server, without downloading or running any real programs on your device. Basically, something else does the legwork. So what does that mean for PUBG?
Wider reach
It’s an interesting move, because one of the key benefits, and selling points, of cloud gaming is that it’s usually part of a larger subscription or service. But PUBG Mobile Cloud seems to be set as a standalone experience that can be enjoyed by an even broader range of players.
The only issue I can see is that the page for PUBG Mobile Cloud still lists a fairly broad range of requirements. But I would think that the primary audience for something like this would be players whose phones can’t handle the popular battle royale in the first place.
Will it find a place? I’d wager there’s got to be some niche for it, but I’ll be darned if I can think what.
