- Dungeon & Fighter: Arad is a newly-announced entry in the DNF franchise
- It looks set to go in a different direction to its predecessors with open-world adventure instead
- Cribbing a bit from the MiHoYo playbook? Maybe.
The Dungeon & Fighter series is, I’d argue, Nexon’s flagship franchise. Bringing in millions of players and with plenty of spin-offs to its name, it may not be as well-known in the West but there’s no denying it’s a lynchpin of their catalogue. Little surprise then that a new spin-off is in the works with Dungeon & Fighter: Arad.
This 3D open-world adventure gave us its first glimpse courtesy of a debut teaser trailer, which before you even ask, yes debuted at the Game Awards. The trailer shows off more of the world and numerous (unnamed) characters that many fans of DNF have already wheedled down to potential classes from the previous entries in the series.
Dungeon & Fighter: Arad promises open-world exploration, action-packed combat and a variety of classes to choose from, as you might expect. There’s also set to be a heavy emphasis on story, with a new roster of characters to meet and interact with, as well as a few cheeky puzzles sprinkled in.
Beyond the dungeon
For the rest of us, there’s not much else to dissect from the teaser trailer. Although judging by the vibes I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re dealing with something approximating the formulae that’s been laid down and popularised by MiHoYo’s catalogue.
We already knew that Arad was on the way, but all we had an indication of was the name. And while everything we’ve seen so far looks appealing I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s running the risk of divering a bit too much from what fans of the series are used to. Still, there’s no denying the production values, and the advertisements reportedly plastered around the Peacock Theatre (which was hosting The Game Awards) indicate Nexon is banking on this being a success.
