- eFootball and the FIFAe team-up for the first FIFAe World Cup has concluded
- Minbappe of Malaysia took home the gold in mobile
- Meanwhile BINONGBOYS, SHNKS-ELGA, GARUDAFRANC and akbarpaudie were the winners over on console
Konami’s team-up of eFootball with FIFA for the FIFAe World Cup 2024 has borne fruit, as both the console and mobile divisions saw winners crowned with the closing of the tournament. Indonesia were winners on the console side of things, while mobile saw Minbappe of Malaysia taking home the gold.
Taking place at the SEF Arena in BLVD Riyadh City, the competition is the inaugural tournament in what both parties are likely hoping will be an ongoing event. As stated above the mobile division was won by competitor Minbappe of Malaysia, while Indonesian competitors BINONGBOYS, SHNKS-ELGA and akbarpaudie were on top over on console.
It should only take a quick glance down at the match itself to see just how much effort was put into the production values for the FIFAe World Cup 2024. Little surprise given that it comes the same year as the inaugural Esports World Cup, part of the major push into investment in esports we’ve seen coming from Saudi Arabia.
Liquid football
Whether or not the FIFAe World Cup 2024 resonates with fans, I think is not the question. It’s clear that both Konami and FIFA are eager to push eFootball as being the football simulator for top-level competition, and this endorsement only solidifies that.
At the same time, I’m sceptical that this kind of glitzy, over-the-top competition will resonate with the average player. Over in the world of fighting games, arguably one of the first architects of modern esports, we’ve often seen major hiccups in top-level play when major organisations get involved. I don’t doubt that something similar could potentially happen with the FIFAe World Cup, but for now, things seem to be smooth.
