Sri Sathya Sai District Collector T.S. Chetan on Tuesday held a review meeting on the employment guarantee initiatives carried out by the Forest Department in the district, focusing on the tree plantation programme for the beautification of Anantapur city.
Mr. Chetan said that officials are working toward the goal of attaining 50% greenery in the district, and instructed officials to devise specific plans in collaboration with Revenue and other departments.
Efforts should be made to establish approximately 35 lakh nurseries by 2025-2026 and various earthworks in the forests, such as contour ditches, rack field dams, and small water pits, through the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, should be carried out, Mr. Chetan said.
City forests
The Collector called for initiatives to create a city forest in each Assembly constituency, with a focus on establishing such projects on revenue lands and slopes of revenue hills.
Mr. Chetan recommended formulating an afforestation strategy extending to the 2025-30 period. Similarly, he directed forest officials to implement a comprehensive planting initiative along both sides of the national and State highways in the district.
