Joey Barton has re-ignited his feud with Alan Shearer after labelling the Newcastle United legend as a ‘liar and a snake’.
The pair have failed to see eye-to-eye ever since the 2008-09 season, when Shearer was head coach of Newcastle and Barton was a key midfielder in the side.Â
During their trip to Liverpool in May that year, Barton was sent off for a late challenge on Xabi Alonso before the Reds went on to secure a 3-0 win over the Magpies.
Shortly after, Newcastle confirmed that Barton had been suspended indefinitely. Reports claimed it was following a dressing room confrontation with Shearer.Â
Though Shearer eventually recalled Barton to their first-team, the duo have never settled their differences and, now, the former midfielder has re-opened their feud.
Speaking on his podcast, Barton delved into the fiery history between himself and Shearer before leaving a strongly-worded caption on a social media post.

Barton produced an expletive-filled rant about the ex-Newcastle boss on his podcastÂ
The caption read: ‘Shearer was a liar and a snake. If Newcastle didn’t appoint him, I believe that group would have survived. Don’t be telling porkies Mary Poppins’.
In the clip from his podcast, Barton said: ‘I’m made up that [that] boring **** Shearer is off Match of the Day as well. [He could] bore a glass eye to sleep him!
‘Most boring man ever and he’s been telling lies! He’s been lying about what happened in the dressing room at Anfield.
‘He’s either got confused because he’s headed that many casies or he’s trying to fit the narrative’.
A clip then played from a previous podcast appearance that Shearer had made – where he claimed Barton had asked for permission to travel to London for the FA Cup semi-final prior to their clash against Liverpool.
Barton’s own podcast clip then resumed, where he said: ‘He said I’d asked him to go to the semi-final. I didn’t ask him to go! I just went. We weren’t playing that weekend and I was injured.
‘He’s obviously got wind of that, which I didn’t know about, and he’s added that to his story. He conveniently missed out that he was coming in as our manager, when I was in the treatment room and in the gym, and saying: ‘The other players were s***. Come on, I need you back!’.
‘So straight away I was like, you’re a f***ing snake you’.Â
In a series of posts on X, Barton took issue with Shearer and labelled him a ‘liar and a snake’Â

Barton’s furious rant didn’t end there. Shortly after, he wrote: ‘I actually hope the baldy, nugget chirps up @alanshearer
‘What I know about him and his BBC cronies, he best keep his nut right down. Back under your stone with the other toad @GaryLineker’.Â
This is not the first occasion that Barton has taken to social media to vent about his rivalry with Shearer – having previously done so back in 2012.Â
After Barton’s infamous sending off against Man City during his time at QPR, Shearer condemned the midfielder’s temperament before he fired back online.
At the time, Barton wrote; ‘Shearers still on my case… I know I f***ed up Alan, thanks for stating the obvious.
‘Whilst were both stating the obvious about each other, can I just say for the record what a great player u were. Well better me…
‘But I have a better hair (which is not hard), wear well better shirts on TV and have a personality(something u lack). P.S. My final point, ur a s*** pundit/manager’.
Shearer is just the latest pundit the feel the virtual wrath of Barton, after the ex-QPR and Newcastle midfielder recently threatened to ‘punch Roy Keane’s head in’.
Former Man United hardman Keane, 53, was involved in a heated pitch-side exchange with Ipswich fans last weekend after the Red Devils’ game against the Tractor Boys.
While working for Sky Sports, Keane responded to relentless taunts from a section of fans at Portman Road, where he once managed, before offering to meet one supporter in the car park.
Barton has previously taken aim at former Newcastle boss Shearer via social media posts
And, following the incident, controversial former Man City and Newcastle midfielder Barton took aim at Keane and insisted he was fed up with the Irishman.
‘Keane’s a b*****nd,’ Barton fumed on his Common Sense podcast. ‘Keane’s started doing my cap in as well.Â
‘And if he wants a Misfits charity boxing match I’ll happily punch Roy Keane’s head in, if anybody wants to get that on.Â
‘Especially for offering out an Ipswich fan who’s shouting at him saying I’ll meet you in the car park.Â
‘And I’m like shut up Roy, you b*****nd.’Â
Meanwhile, back in July, Barton was charged with alleged ‘malicious communications’ towards former England star and pundit Eni Aluko – and branded the legal system a ‘banana republic’ in response.Â
The 42-year-old, who has pleaded his innocence, is set to face a three-day trial over the matter next May.
In January, the former Premier League footballer had compared Aluko and fellow pundit Lucy Ward to the serial killers Fred and Rose West.Â
Barton also launched a verbal tirade on Roy Keane (middle) after his confrontation with a fanÂ
In July, Barton was charged with alleged ‘malicious communications’ towards Eni Aluko
After Aluko covered Crystal Palace’s FA Cup draw with Everton on January 4 with Ward, Barton had written: ‘How is she even talking about men’s football?Â
‘She can’t even kick a ball properly. Your coverage of the EFC game last night, took it to a new low. Eni Aluko and Lucy Ward, the Fred and Rose West of football commentary.’
The Wests murdered 12 women and young girls over the course of 20 years. Fred took his own life before facing trial while Rose was sentenced to 10 life terms. She remains in prison aged 70.
Barton then stoked the fire further by making his criticism even more extreme, writing that Aluko was ‘clearly in the Joseph Stalin category’Â for ‘murdering hundreds of thousands of fans’ ears’.
