The police have deployed more patrol squads on the national and State highways in Kozhikode city to crack down on road safety rule violations and mitigate late-night accidents. The squads are now working 24×7 based on a recent instruction from Additional Director General of Police (Law and order) Manoj Abraham.
Patrol squads from 21 police stations are now part of the drive in Kozhikode city. This is apart from the deployment of 13 control room vehicles in different parts of the city. Late-night inspections are conducted with the support of 175 police officers from various stations.
“The presence of checking squads has been ensured near all the recently identified black spots. On Thursday night alone, 604 vehicles were covered in the flash inspections by the squads in different parts of the city,” said a senior police officer. He said the enforcement squads of the Motor Vehicles department were also conducting joint and independent inspections to support the special drive.
Enforcement squad members said they were mainly checking drunk driving, overload, drivers’ negligence, sleep distraction, speed limit violations, misuse of mobile phones, hazardous night parking, and lane traffic discipline violations. Details of legal actions taken and the amount collected as fine would be released soon, they said.
The special drive was launched in Kozhikode city on December 16 following a joint meeting attended by senior police and Motor Vehicles department officers. Eight Assistant Commissioners of Police were given the charge to coordinate the drive. They said the police also initiated the distribution of black coffee in some of the checking points to help drivers stay alert and reduce the risk of accidents during long drives.
