Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development J. Chinchurani will inaugurate the prestigious President’s Trophy Boat Race and the finals of the Champions Boat League on Saturday (December 21) at Ashtamudi Lake.
The inauguration ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. and Kollam Mayor Prasanna Ernest will hoist the flag. M. Mukesh, MLA, will preside over the function and N.K. Premachandran, MP, will flag off the mass drill.
Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal will inaugurate the closing ceremony and distribute the prizes. M. Noushad, MLA, will preside over the closing ceremony while MPs Kodikunnil Suresh, K.C. Venugopal, MLAs P.S. Supal, Sujith Vijayan Pillai, G.S. Jayalal, Koovur Kunjumon, P.C. Vishnunath, R. Mahesh, district panchayat president P.K. Gopan, District Collector N. Devidas, and Tourism Secretary K. Biju will be present.
Three tracks have been prepared for the event and a total of nine snake boats and 10 small boats will compete in various categories. Two boats in the Veppu A category, two in the Iruttukutti A category, three in the Iruttukutti B category, and three in women’s Thekkethodi (thara vallam) will participate in the races. The race will be held over a distance of 1,100 metres, starting near the Thevalli Palace and ending at the boat jetty near the KSRTC bus stand.
According to race committee chairperson R.K. Kurup, latest technology will be used to ensure accurate results. All boats, except for those participating in the competition and those engaged in official duties, will be prohibited from the area between the DTPC boat jetty and Thevally bridge to ensure safety.
