So, who will be representing each stage? Let’s jump into it…
HOMEGROWN:
Led by DJ and radio host powerhouse and Clash favourite Jyoty, Homegrown brings all the electronic club culture sounds you can dream of. Jyoty is new to the Red Bull Culture Clash scene, but her sounds are definitely not new to the crowds – anyone who has listened to her longstanding show on Rinse FM knows the breadth of electronic music that is her expertise. Bringing together Lil Silva, Stush, Conducta, Flowdan and Jyoty in full effect. Be prepared to hear garage, grime, dance, UK funky and everything in between. Homegrown is celebrating the full spectrum of UK rave culture – can they win the crowds’ ears and hearts?
SPICE ARMY:
Representing Jamaica and led by the Queen of Dancehall Spice, her crew named ‘Spice Army’ will have the fiercest artists and DJs from the Caribbean with a lot of CLASH friends & family included. Mak 10, Rampage, Richie Feelings, Jiggy D, Noah Powa, Loyal Squad, Haile and Louie from WSTRN and Spice herself. Spice is no stranger to Red Bull Culture Clash having last graced the stage as a special guest in 2016. Now nearly 10 years later, she’s back and will be leading her own crew to victory bringing us all the vibes from the islands.
NATIVE SOUNDSYSTEM:
Representing the Afro soundscapes for the very first time, Native Soundsystem will pay homage and bringing one of the fastest growing global genres in recent years to the clash. Led by Lagos-hailing artist, producer and label owner and Clash favourite Teezee joined by Spinall, Michael Dapaah, Pa Salieu, NSG and Brazy. Native Soundsystem will come armed with an arsenal of the Afro soundscapes from Amapiano to Alté, Gqom and beyond. Could this be their first victory to take home the Red Bull Culture Clash trophy for the Native stage?
VOICE OF THE STREETS:
Led by cultural figurehead, BBC Radio 1’s Rap Show host and friend of CLASH Kenny Allstar is waving the flag for the UK Rap stage, with rap legends new and old; Ghetts, Big Narstie, Cristale, DJ AG, DJ Andy P, Bushkin and Snoochie Shy as special guests ready to spray, and a crate full of unexpected dubplates – will the victory lie with another crew or come back to the streets?
Kenny Allstar of Voice of The Streets crew has added, “I’ve been watching Culture Clash since its inception and as a DJ it’s a dream. It’s like one of the biggest moments of any DJ’s career. You feel like you’re a part of a top 2% of sounds and DJs from around the world. Some of the biggest DJs have hosted a stage at Culture Clash. And this cements me as one of those ones. You can say what you want, have your opinion, but when the history books are drafted up Kenny Allstar is in that conversation and that’s immortalised in my career now.”
Jyoty of Homegrown crew says, “You can expect education for the younger generations that are going to be in there. We’re going to be running rhythms and bringing people out that are so pivotal to music culture, specifically in the UK. We’re only going to pick the cream of the crop. We’re going to win with hype through exceptional talent.”
Teezee of Native crew says, “Being part of Culture Clash is a real honour. Being a student of the game, those are the things we used to watch; BBK, Chase and Status winning, all of those memories. So culturally it’s something that’s extremely important. It’s really exciting for it to be back! Obviously it’s the first time Afrobeats is participating in it [as a genre] too, so it’s going to be a beautiful experiment.”
The unique music battle, inspired by Jamaican sound clash culture, pits musical crews or Sound Systems against each other to win over the crowd with their exclusive dubplates (special re-recordings of popular songs). The crowd’s reaction determines the winner. It’s a one-night-only experience with surprises at every turn. If you’re not there, you’ll miss the burn. Simple as that.
