A program providing meals to seniors and people will expand its reach this winter thanks to a donation from Caesars Windsor.
VON Windsor-Essex received a $10,000 donation Wednesday from Caesars Windsor Cares to VON’s Compassionate Meals program, offered through its Meals on Wheels counterpart. The contribution to Compassionate Meals will help ensure isolated seniors who are unable to shop or cook for themselves will receive a free meal.

“As food prices continue to soar and our population ages, the need for Meals on Wheels has never been greater,” program supervisor Christine Brush said. “With the support of Caesars Windsor Cares, VON will deliver 1,200 free meals to seniors in crisis across Windsor.
“This vital service is only possible thanks the generosity of donors and community partners, ensuring VON can offer free supportive meals during times of greatest need.”
Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver hot — also offered frozen — food to seniors’ doors Monday to Friday, year-round. The program is especially helpful for housebound individuals, people recovering from surgery or illness and people who can’t shop or cook for themselves.
Caesars Windsor Cares also extended support Wednesday to VON through its HERO program, which allows volunteers to accompany delivery drivers on their routes and witness the positive impact firsthand.
“We are proud to continue to work with organizations like VON that effectively identify those in need and help improve the health and wellness of the most vulnerable in our community,” Mary Riley, the casino’s vice-president of marketing, said in a release.
With 125 years in service, VON is Canada’s longest-serving home and community health charity.
