There has been a discovery of a deadly bacterial infection in Alabama and it’s caused an Alabama health department to warn the public.
Have you ever heard of Neisseria meningitidis??
Neisseria Meningitidis
According to the CDC, Neisseria meningitidis takes only a few hours to become deadly. Neisseria meningitidis is an infection caused by bacteria called Neisseria meningitidis.
Meningococcal disease can cause meningitis, a severe swelling of the brain and spinal cord membranes, or meningococcemia, a severe blood infection. It is characterized by sudden onset of fever, intense headache, nausea, and often vomiting. Meningococcal disease can lead to serious complications, including death.
The bacteria spreads through respiratory droplets from the nose and throat. It can be transmitted through close, prolonged, or intimate contact. It is most common in the winter and spring. Post exposure treatment with antibiotics may be indicated for those people who may have been exposed.

There is a confirmed case of Neisseria meningitidis right here in Alabama. According to a press release from the Mobile County Health Department, this is the first case reported in Mobile County this year. Because of patient privacy rights under the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), no additional identifying information will be made available.
In the press release, Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County warns “that anyone can get the disease, and it is important to seek medical attention if you have symptoms. Symptoms of meningococcal disease can first appear as a flu-like illness and rapidly worsen.”
