When Steve Smith makes a hundred, he treats himself to a block of chocolate.
But what was the reward for becoming the 15th player to score 10,000 Test runs?
“Maybe a chocolate brownie in the hotel with a bit of vanilla ice cream,” Smith said before departing for Australia’s Test series against Sri Lanka.
It was time to get the ice cream out after Smith ticked over to five figures with a quick single on the first ball of his innings in Galle on Wednesday. He didn’t stop there, bringing up his 35th Test century on a memorable day. Perhaps he deserved two brownies.
The 35-year-old joins Allan Border, Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting as the only Australians to reach 10,000 Test runs.
Smith has got there quicker than his three Australian predecessors in terms of matches played, doing so in his 115th Test. Ponting reached 10,000 runs in fewer innings.
Ponting (118 matches, 196 innings), Border (136 matches, 235 innings) and Waugh (156 matches, 244 innings) all went down as Australian greats and Smith (205 innings) is now in that category.
But who does Smith think could be the fifth Australian to reach the milestone?
