When Andrea Lafond became CEO of the Meewasin Valley Authority, she was hoping to lead the river valley conservation and development organization out of a turbulent time and into calmer, clearer waters.

Now, Lafond says she is optimistic about what the MVA can become in the years ahead — but she will be “a champion on the sidelines.”
Lafond resigned as CEO to join Nature Conservancy Canada as its regional vice-president in Saskatchewan.

“My time at Meewasin has been incredibly meaningful, working with an amazing team and community to advance … both the organization and the valley for future sustainability and generations,” she said in a statement on Friday.
“I am so excited for what is yet to come as Meewasin grows.”
In early February, the MVA board of directors will name an interim CEO and start the search process for its new CEO.
Board chair Angela Bedard-Haughn said while Lafond will be missed, she is leaving the organization “in a position of strength.”
“Under her leadership, the organization has grown in many ways, including new partnerships, enhanced trail infrastructure, diversified programming and strengthened stewardship,” said Bedard-Haughn.
When Lafond was hired as CEO in 2018, the agency was grappling with growing responsibilities, shrinking resources and provincial funding cuts.
The Meewasin Valley covers approximately 65 square kilometres, including Wanuskewin Heritage Park and the Beaver Creek and Cranberry Flats conservation areas.
