Grief Like a Stray Dog is a short interactive play about Nadia, a thirteen-year-old postwoman in a close-knit rural town. As World War II reaches its peak, she moves through the village with newspapers and letters, bringing both ordinary news and heartbreaking notifications to families who have lost loved ones in battle.
The author drew inspiration for Nadia’s character from their grandmother, who grew up in a village near Rzhev, close to one of the Eastern Front’s fiercest battlefields. Real wartime memories passed down by relatives and locals shaped her story. And many of the letters in the book come from real correspondence.
The game’s art style draws from children’s drawings, neo-expressionism, Russian lubok prints, and Soviet-era book illustrations. It blends documentary storytelling with Russian folklore, exploring war, community, and destiny.
