Netflix viewers have only a few days to catch up on ‘guilty pleasure’ show Sweet Magnolias before the fourth season is released.
The romantic drama series is based on the novels of the same name by Sherryl Woods and stars JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott and Heather Headley as three friends – Maddie, Dana Sue and Helen – from the town of Serenity in South Carolina.
After growing up together, the show follows the trio as they ‘shepherd each other through the complexities of romance, career, and family’.
The first season was released in 2020 and has since been followed by another two, which dropped in 2022 and 2023.
Throughout the series so far, fans have called the show a ‘breath of fresh air’ and ‘guilty pleasure’.
‘Heartwarming and cute. Beautifully made,’ Justin posted on review site Rotten Tomatoes.
‘Heartwarming and joyful show yet grounded in reality meaning viewers can relate to what is happening. The characters are wonderful, and I love the twists and turns. Just how I imagine life in a small town. Completely addictive,’ someone else shared.
‘One of my favourite shows, I would recommend if you enjoy Gilmore Girls or Virgin River. Always puts a smile on my face when I watch this show, I can really resonate with some of the characters,’ another added.
Others shared they were left in tears tuning in too.
After a nearly two-year wait, season 4 is due this week and will follow the friends’ weather ‘both emotional and meteorological storms’.
It’s been teased how they will also navigate the ‘return of old foes, the loss of great loves, and the painful transition from old dreams to new ones’.
‘As the men in their lives pursue their own goals and their teenagers take uneasy steps toward adulthood, the Magnolias support each other with creative problem-solving, deep-hearted commitment, and — as always — weekly margaritas,’ Netflix has revealed.
The series was developed by Sheryl J. Anderson has also told Netflix’s Tudum about how season 4 will examine ‘the twists and turns of romance, the complexity of friendship, the surprises that pop up in life, and how all these things make us more grateful for the people who love us, the people who fight for and with us, and the people who can make us laugh, whatever we’re going through’.
Although the last season saw the women face major conflict in their long-standing friendship Anderson said the ‘beating heart’ of the show was how the three continued to ‘sustain and celebrate each other’.
Sweet Magnolias season 4 is streaming from Thursday on Netflix.
