Alabama softball split its two games Saturday at the Candrea Classic, rallying from an early deficit to defeat No. 22 Washington, 7-3, before falling to tournament host and 16th-ranked Arizona, 9-1, in five innings.
In the day’s opening game, Alabama (3-1) trailed 3-0 early after a first inning home run from Washington (2-2) and it remained a three-run game until a Larissa Preuitt solo home run in the fourth inning put the Crimson Tide on the scoreboard. With two on and two out in the top of the sixth, Brooke Ellestad crushed a three-run home run to give Alabama a 4-3 lead. The Tide added three insurance runs in the seventh, bringing the score to its final tally of 7-3. In the nightcap, Arizona (4-1) took a 2-0 lead in the third before Alabama got a run back in the fifth to cut the lead in half. The Wildcats erased any chance of a comeback with a big seven-run bottom of the fifth, capped by a three-run double with two out to end the game in five innings and defeat the Tide, 9-1.
