Just over a week from announcing that Pebble smartwatches are returning, the creator Eric Migicovsky has shared his progress in a new blog post.
The Canadian claims that when Google published the open-source Pebble codebase, he needed to go through the code line by line, and that’s what he’s been doing all week. Now, he has the software running on a small e-ink test screen.
The creator says that the new Pebble team is aiming to run new Pebbles on the nRF52840 chipset and he’s flying to Shenzhen soon to meet with factories and suppliers.
In his blog post about the project, Migicovsky asks users not to beg for new features and says that the new Pebble will be pretty much the same as the old model, but since the software will be open-source, it will be up to each user to add their own features.
Migicovsky plans to share more hardware details in the future but says that anyone looking to run the really bare-bones version of this new software version on an old Pebble will be able to do so with the Cobble app APK, but he stresses that it’s still early on so there isn’t much to play with now.
He’s also outlined the small team and its plan to build new watches, modify PebbleOS to run on them and then update the Cobble app with new features down the line. In terms of the team, it seems like a mix of new faces, people who have been working on Rebble and Cobble over the past few years and some people from the original Pebble team.
If you are a developer and interested in helping out, you can sign up inside Migicovsky’s blog post. There’s also a duo of tutorials to teach people how to build a Pebble watch face. You can also stay more in tune with the updates by following along in the Rebble Discord server.
