Apple TV+ is reportedly losing big money despite having fans hooked on shows like Severance.
Although the streaming giant is home to what Metro has hailed has ‘the best thriller of 2025’, it’s claimed the company’s television branch hasn’t turned a profit.
According to a report from The Information, Apple’s subscription service is losing more than $1billion a year, with the streamer spending around $4.5bn annually on content.
Apple TV+ boasts near enough an entirely original lineup of programming, and is said to have around 45million subscribers.
The annual spent for Apple TV+ – which launched in 2019 – is thought to have dropped by around $500m last year, while shows like Ted Lasso, Severance and more have helped its subscriber count rise.
Although Apple doesn’t publicly disclose subscriber or financial metrics for its streaming platform, the streaming side is part of Apple’s Services branch, including Apple Music, the App Store and others.

For the year-end 2024 quarter, revenue for the services rose by 14% year-on-year to hit $26.3bn.
Apple TV+ seems to be keeping viewers happy, especially as fans hailed the second season of Severance as ‘peak television’ after the drama finally returned following a three-year wait.
Mark S (Adam Scott), Helly R (Britt Lower), Irving B (John Turturro) and Dylan G (Zach Cherry) all returned back to work at the macrodata refinement team to continue their mysterious jobs at Lumon.
The show follows office worker Mark and his employees, who have all opted to have their memories surgically split between their professional and personal lives.
Season two is reported to have cost $200m, and it appears to be money well spent after the finale left fans in awe.

As well as news about Ted Lasso returning for a fourth season, fans have also been getting excited about other Apple TV+ arrivals, like upcoming comedy The Studio, which stars Martin Scorsese and Zac Efron.

In our review, Metro said: ‘You still have a few weeks until you get sucked into The Studio. But strap in and brace yourself for one hell of a televisual ride.’
Apple TV+ is also offering plenty of epic shows flying under the radar, with Dope Thief viewers hailing the drama as one of the best of the year.
The new crime drama focuses on Philadelphia friends Ray (Brian Tyree Henry) and Manny Carvalho (Wagner Moura) posing as DEA agents as they try to rob a house.
The face some serious consequences when they discover the house they’ve targeted is actually one of the city’s biggest narcotics operations, and the pair find themselves on the run from gang leaders and the FBI.
Metro has contacted Apple TV+ reps for comment.
