Canadian pride our greatest natural resource

Canadian pride came to me later in life.
I am a dual citizen of the U.S. and Canada after emigrating from Ohio in 1995. This is my 30th year in Canada, 21 of which I’ve been a citizen.
Canadian pride is near and dear to my heart. Canadian pride defines each and every one of us. It is our greatest resource. With the help of Donald Trump, it is growing stronger every day.

Speaking from experience, I believe one of the things that hinders Americans the most is their ethnocentrism. I was ignorant to this growing up (no one’s fault but my own).
Living in both countries has broadened my knowledge and views. No country is perfect. As Canadians, we certainly have differences of opinion and critiques over an abundance of issues. What sets us apart, is our ability to remain unified and the knowledge that our country is truly great.
We are a country that is moving forward instead of backwards, unlike the U.S.
Unfortunately, what was once a “blending of two cultures” is clearly evaporating. Now, in the face of an unprovoked, nonsensical trade war with the U.S., my Canadian pride is stronger than ever.
We Canadians are once again making very practical choices and decisions in the face of the U.S. threat. We are the true north strong and free. We are united and committed to protecting our values and way of life.
Our Canadian pride will see us through this. Current Trump initiatives against Canada are only strengthening us and our national pride, a resource I feel Americans are bleeding.

Canada needs unity now, not an election
Re: Tasha Kheiridden: To tackle tariffs, Canada needs a unity government (Mar. 4)
Columnist Tasha Kheiridden made a great point in that what we need now is unity in our government to fight the evil that is Donald Trump.
This is not the time to call a federal election while we are in a battle to keep our country. I feel that an election will be a major distraction to the work that has to be done in this very difficult time in our history.
So, come on Liberals, Conservatives, NDP and Bloc Québécois, let’s get together to face this threat to all Canadians.

I’ll miss Lloyd Brown-John’s columns — rest in peace
Re: Obit: Windsor Star columnist Lloyd Brown-John was ‘connoisseur of life’ (Feb. 28)
I will miss Lloyd Brown-John’s columns. I read almost every one. Some I agreed with and some I didn’t.
Since he has passed, I will get the last word while he enjoys his pursuits in heaven.
Regarding the American system of politics, as opposed to the Canadian system — watching our system in the media, it seems more theatre than politics. One-upmanship with humour — not serious to me. The American system seems more serious in getting something settled.
