Westbound lanes of Highway 401 have reopened following a fuel spill on early Sunday morning that closed the highway for almost 17 hours.
The incident happened between Exit 56 at Essex County Road 42 and Exit 48 at Highway 77 (Comber Side Road) around 3 a.m. Sunday, according the Sgt. Ed Sanchuk of the Ontario Provincial Police.
A fuel tanker rolled over spilled approximately 20,000 litres of fuel.

Ministry of the Environment officials were onsite Sunday. Clean-up crews arrived to deal with spill and help to minimize any environmental damage.
Police report there were no injuries.
“The good news out of this, the driver was not injured,” Sanchuk said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
“The bad news, thousands of litres of fuel has spilled into the roadways into a nearby ditch.”
Sanchuk said the investigation into the incident is ongoing. OPP are asking anyone with dashcam footage that may help with the investigation to come forward.
