The 2024 Paris Olympics resume on Saturday with several more gold medals on the line. Among the most intriguing events that SportsLine expert Mike Tierney is keeping a watchful eye on include a men’s and women’s swimming showdown and two women’s track and field events. In the men’s 100-meter butterfly, Frenchman Maxime Grousset will look to continue the home pool advantage as he looks to follow in the footsteps of teammate Leon Marchand, who has four gold medals at these Olympics. Hungary’s Kristof Milak (-115) is the favorite, while Canada’s Josh Liendo and Grousset are at +430, and Switzerland’s Noe Ponti at +750. The 200 fly is set for 2:30 p.m. ET.
The women’s 200-meter individual medley also could feature some drama. Summer McIntosh (+155) of Canada is favored, but she faces stiff competition in the form of Americans Kate Douglass (+260) and Alexandra Walsh (+310). Another heavyweight in the event, which begins at 3:08 p.m. ET, is Australia’s Kaylee McKeown (+600). Earlier this week, McIntosh earned gold in the 200 butterfly and the 400 medley. She earned gold in the 200 medley at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Before locking in any 2024 Summer Olympics picks on those events or others, you need to see what SportsLine Olympic insider Mike Tierney has to say.
A national sportswriter whose work appears in The New York Times and Los Angeles Times, Tierney has covered nine Olympic Games in person. At Rio in 2016, Tierney profited big-time. He told readers to bet over on Team USA’s gold medal count (41.5) and over on Team USA’s overall medal count (102.5). The result? 46 golds, 121 medals and two easy cashes. Then, at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, Tierney hit two of his three predictions: Germany (+200) to win the most gold medals and the United States winning under 10.5 gold medals (+110). Anybody following has seen some big returns.
Now, Tierney has broken down the 2024 Olympics from every possible angle and revealed his best bets for Saturday, Aug. 3. He has one men’s and one women’s swimming, and two women’s track and field selections. You can visit SportsLine now to see his 2024 Summer Olympics picks.
Top 2024 Paris Olympics picks for Saturday, August 3
In the women’s 200-meter individual medley, Tierney is backing Summer McIntosh’s plus-odds. At +155, Tierney sees good value, especially since one of her main challengers – Australia’s Kaylee McKeown – struggled with the seventh-best time in the semifinals. American Kate Douglass, the other main challenger, has two world championship victories in the event, but Tierney doesn’t think the moment has been too much for the 17-year-old McIntosh.
“(McIntosh) entered qualifying with two main challengers,” Tierney told SportsLine. “However, Kaylee McKeown of Australia struggled in with the seventh-best time during the semis, placing her chances in doubt. That leaves only Kate Douglass of the U.S., a two-time world champ in the event. McIntosh excels in the butterfly and freestyle. The mature 17-year-old has shown no indication of being dazzled by the bright lights and can cement her status as the female breakout star of these Games.” See the rest of Tierney’s picks here.
