Albanese has arrived at Sydney airport to welcome our Olympians home after the touchdown of the Qantas Olympic flight.
Speaking in an interview with Karl Stefanovic on the Today Show, Albanese said the games were “full of joy”.
“It just lifted the whole country up,” he said.
Albanese added the $250 million funding boost to the Australian Institute of Sport will help athletes compete in the Los Angeles Olympics and Brisbane Olympics.
“Investment in the Australian Institute of Sport will prepare us for 2032. The joint was falling apart and what we need to do is to put back into our athletes,” he said.
“Most of these people don’t earn a lot of money, they certainly don’t earn the money that AFL or NRL players or cricketers or golfers and they do it out of their love for sport.”
He said the Brisbane games would be good for athletes and Australians alike.
“Sydney is still reaping the benefits from 2000. Melbourne is still reaping the benefits from 1956. So this will be great for Queensland and great for our whole country,” he said.
