Oasis brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher have been feuding for 15 years, with the latter storming that he couldn’t stand working with his brother “one day longer” when he sensationally quit the group.
He revealed years later that it would take “half a billion pounds” to convince him to share the stage with Liam again. Yet that huge payday may have – almost – arrived, as rumours suggest that the band could be set to earn £400 million from a UK comeback tour.
Have the pair really put their differences aside, or are they merely motivated by money? According to a source published in Mail Online: “Noel would only ever consider sharing the stage with Liam again if the money was astronomical and that’s what convinced him.”
The source argued: “They haven’t buried the hatchet and Noel will always have huge reservations about being in a band with Liam as he’s so unpredictable – both on and off stage. “Certain conditions will have to be put in place in regards to safeguarding Noel’s presence in this comeback because he really can’t handle Liam’s form for being a liability.”
However, they added that the huge sums of money on the table “will obviously help” in the event of any “potential ordeals”, branding it a “life-changing” amount of cash. Music industry sources have suggested that agreeing to a Glastonbury gig, as well as performing at key venues such as London’s Wembley Arena and their native Manchester’s Heaton Park could end up raking them in £400 million.
That’s 80 percent of the sum that a still enraged Noel claimed he would need to consider a comeback with his “liability” brother by his side when he addressed the issue in 2014.
Noel has been unexpectedly affectionate when speaking about his brother in recent days, even admiringly complimenting him as a better singer.
“When I would sing a song, it would sound good. When [Liam] sung it, it sounded great,” he stated just a few days ago in a video released to mark the anniversary of the debut Oasis album Definitely Maybe.
“I can’t sing Cigarettes & Alcohol, Rock’n’Roll Star and all that. I don’t have the same attitude as him,” he continued.
“My voice is half a Guinness on a Tuesday – it’s all right. Liam’s is 10 shots of tequila on a Friday.”
Meanwhile, Liam also matched Noel’s mood when he dedicated a song to him at his Reading Festival performance on Sunday night.
The headlining set on the main stage, which saw him perform classic Definitely Maybe tracks to a nostalgic crowd, hyped fans even more for the reunion.
An announcement is expected to be made tomorrow at 8am, according to Liam and Noel’s social media pages – and followers’ fingers are crossed that it will relate to the tour they’ve been waiting for since the spat 15 years ago.
