Over the last year, emerging health trends have had one goal – to turn the clocks back and stop one of the biggest guarantees in life; ageing.
Every week another supplement, jab or drink is thrust into the spotlight, promising to offer the secret to eternal youth.
But do any of them actually serve any of these benefits?

The longevity expert takes a whole cocktail of supplements to give his body the boost it needs.
Here, he reveals which supplements he takes specifically for longevity, brain and skin health.
NAD+
Dr Enayat has NAD+ injections to boost energy levels and even strengthen the immune system.
It’s thought injections of NAD+ helps combat age-related changes by stimulating the repair of damaged tissue and promoting production of new healthy cells, both in the skin and inside the body.
It stands for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide and the molecule is found in every cell of your body and is responsible for creating energy and maintaining the health of the cell.
One 2018 review suggested boosting NAD+ levels could help counter accelerated aging and delay the progression of age-related diseases.
Dr Enayat claims that as we get older the levels of NAD+ in our body decline.
He adds that there is a large body of evidence to show that decline starts as early as 20 years old.

‘NAD+ plays a very important role in the production of cellular energy and activation of longevity proteins and pathways that help you repair your cells and tissues including your DNA,’ he told MailOnline.
The supplement, Dr Enayat claims, helps the mitochondria — the powerhouse of cells that are vital for making energy and a variety of bodily processes — which in turn can help your body produce more cellular energy and repair DNA better making your cells ‘healthier’.
He opts to get the supplement injected under his skin, but it is also available in pill form and as an IV drip — which he sells in his clinic from £250 a session.
He added: ‘I get a noticeable effect from taking injections, my concentration peaks and I feel more energetic.
‘It’s not just about longevity for me, it’s also about what makes me feel better in the short term.’
Magnesium
After testing hundreds of patients at his clinic and discovering that about 80 per cent of them had low magnesium levels, he now includes it in his daily dose of vitamins.
The metallic element mainly found in the bones is essential to life.
You can get it from nutrient-dense foods, such as, nuts, seeds, mackerel and bananas.
Dr Enayat says taking it helps your bones and cognitive brain health.
He adds that low levels of magnesium can be associated ‘with not sleeping very well, nervousness, muscle cramps and twitching.’

This is echoed by NHS advice which says a magnesium test may be offered to someone who has symptoms including nausea weakness, twitching, cramping and an irregular heartbeat.
It’s been shown to be key for brain, bone and heart health.
One 2019 study, which followed more than 6,000 women over the age of 65 over 20 years, found sufficient levels of magnesium were linked with a lower risk of developing mild cognitive impairment.
Another 2018 review found those with higher consumption of magnesium had a lower risk of developing heart disease.

Protein powder and collagen
Protein is essential for the body to grow and repair itself.
That’s why Dr Enayat includes it in his supplements for longevity.
Enzymes in the body are all protein based, they break down food , help DNA replicate and destroy toxins in the liver.
But our muscles are also mostly protein, along with hair and fingernails and bones and skin rely on it to work and grow.
Although it can be found in beans, pulses, fish, eggs and meat, the longevity expert says he takes when he knows he is not getting enough in his diet.

‘I take a collagen protein powder, not every day, but particularly on the days where I know nutritionally I am going to have less protein,’ he said.
‘I cycle between different types of protein,’ he added.
‘For a period I will do beef collagen and collagen peptide proteins and then I’ll do some split pea based protein powder, which is very easy on the digestive tract.
‘Then, if I am going through any kind of muscle building I will do some whey based protein.’
He explains that he does this over three month periods to prevent getting an ‘inflammatory response’.
‘If you are overexposed to things, eventually you’ll develop sensitivity to it. Sensitivity will drive an inflammatory response, this will take your energy away, and will leave you feeling suboptimal,’ he said.
Dr Enayat stresses that although these supplements are ideal for him, people should first get a blood test to identify what nutrients your body needs before trying a variety supplements.
