The owners of Saskatoon’s iconic Prairie Lily riverboat say next year’s season will be their last with the businesses — but that’s not necessarily the end of the boat’s story.
“We can’t put into words how much we appreciate all your support, kindness, and encouragement over the past dozen years,” Captain Mike Steckhan and Joan Steckhan wrote in a social media post announcing the decision.

“We’ve truly had a great ride, rather cruise, and it’s because of all of you, our crews over the years, and our beloved city, Saskatoon. From the bottom of our hearts — thank you.
“Now, that doesn’t necessarily mean The Prairie Lily actually has to retire. It’s really us — Captain Mike and Joan — who are retiring. Anyone want a riverboat?
“We hope a new owner will come forward and keep The Lily on the river. Curious? You can find more information on our website.”
The co-owners bought the ship in 2012 and brought it to Saskatoon from Laughlin, Nevada.
In an interview with The StarPhoenix last year, they explained that Mike spent 27 years in the navy and was a chief engineer on Canadian warships, while Joan is a certified public accountant with experience running non-profits. Their skills blended together to make the riverboat business work.
“We have always felt we are part the Community of Saskatoon and Saskatchewan,” the wrote on their website.
“There are a number of organisations we work and participate with through local memberships, relationships, and donations. This has helped us to understand our customers and their interests and be part of the communities that support our business. This includes the City of Saskatoon, Discover Saskatoon, The Meewasin Valley Authority, other river users and our neighbours, Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan and The Wonderhub.”
