- David Schwarz reveals what happened after pie incident
- Attacked Sam Newman on live TV in retaliation
Former Melbourne star David Schwarz has revealed the withering spray his mum directed at Footy Show host Eddie McGuire after he attacked Sam Newman in retaliation for an infamous incident on live TV.
Schwarz was hit in the face with a cream pie by Newman in 2001 as a mock punishment for his underwhelming performance in his 150th AFL game.
The footy star reacted angrily, smashing Newman in the chest and sending him flying across the set.
The prank was one of the most controversial moments on The Footy Show, and Schwarz has now revealed that his mother called up McGuire and gave him both barrels in an exchange so foul-mouthed it can’t be printed in full.
‘When it all happened you go to a commercial break and they clean the pie off, and it was a lemon meringue pie, because I couldn’t see,’ Schwarz told the Inspiring Sport Stories with Tim Gossage podcast.
‘Sam had hurt his back [when I pushed him] so he’d slipped a disc in his back so he was in trouble, Ed’s gone ballistic because he’s a control freak and (fellow panellists) Chris Tarrant and Spida Everitt are sitting there going what the f**k has just happened.
‘At the end of the show the producer comes out and says Ed, Mary Schwarz is on the phone. My mum worked for Vic Police and being a single mum and what she’s been through, she’s as tough as old desert boots.
‘Apparently the phone call went like this: She said, “Ed, you have no idea who you’ve just f**ked with. You’re from Broadmeadows, we’re from Sunbury, we’re going to punch your f**king head in.
‘We want a front page apology on the Herald Sun, we want a Channel Nine news apology and if we don’t [get it], watch out’.
David Schwarz said his furious mum called Eddie McGuire after infamous pie incident
Schwarz said McGuire offered his angry mum a holiday to calm her down
‘Ed’s going, just settle down, Mary. [She says] “We’re going to come and get you, what you did to my son is a disgrace”.
‘And Ed said, “Mary, I’ve got a trip for two to Bali if you’re interested”.
‘So my mum got a trip for two to Bali and buckled like you wouldn’t believe. Never got an apology, never got any of that.’
In 2020, Sam Newman claimed that Schwarz knew the whole prank was a set-up and has since ‘dined out’ on it.
Schwarz (pictured right with his former Demons teammate Jeff Farmer in 2021) described his mum as as ‘tough as old desert boots’
‘People were wary about coming on in the end, because they thought if I’m going to throw a pie in the face of someone like David Schwarz, why would we send our players in to have that happen to them,’ Newman told the Sacked: Showbiz podcast.
‘I’ve been happy to go along with all that, but that was absolutely organised and I think David’s dined out on it a little. And fair enough, I’m not going to step on him.
