Shayne Ward was “shocked” after discovering he was in the bottom two on Strictly Come Dancing, claims a body language expert.
The former Coronation Street actor, 39, received the fewest amounts of votes alongside Nick Knowles, with the duo forced to fight for their place in the BBC competition during Sunday night’s (October 13) results show.
Speaking on behalf of Betfair Casino, Darren Stanton claimed Shayne and his partner Nancy Xu weren’t expecting to be in the dance-off, however, were “very humble” in their response to finding out they were through to week five.
Analysing their body language, he said: “Shayne and Nancy were shocked to be in the dance-off, very unexpected for them. The thing that strikes me about this couple is they are incredibly humble.
“Just after they were announced that they had been put through this week, Nancy touches her heart, which is something people do unconsciously when they have an outpouring of emotion. Some people fake it, but here it is genuine and authentic.”
Darren continued: “She is genuinely happy and grateful to have been put through. She follows it up with a bow, which is a submissive gesture, a sign to acknowledge power and position. It’s making yourself smaller in height.
“She is genuinely grateful to have been put through, and we see a similar gesture from Shayne, he touches his heart as well quite a lot. They’re very tactile and comfortable, which is why I found it strange for them to be in the bottom two.”
On Saturday night (October 12), Shayne and Nancy performed the Cha Cha to Ain’t No Love (Ain’t No Use) by Sub Sub. The pair finished joint fourth on the leaderboad with 30 points, making their position in the dance-off all the more surprising.
Reacting to the result, Shayne told host Tess Daly: “I feel good, that’s the thing about this show, nobody is truly safe.” After the results show aired, Shayne shared a message with his followers, reminding them how important it is to vote.
The X Factor winner wrote on his Instagram Story: “I would like to thank everyone who did vote for myself and Nancy. We are truly grateful for your time and support.
“Thanks to the judges I get to dance for another week with the most amazing teacher, dancer and now friend, Nancy.”
The dad-of-two added: “It’s a gentle reminder that no one is truly safe and that each vote counts. I hope to keep dancing for you all. A massive shout out to Nick and Luba, it was such a pleasure getting to spend time with you both. Nick, you are a gentleman! Luba, you are amazing.”
