A Windsor-based group that promotes vegan recipes gave away about 100 alternative turkey roasts downtown Saturday to promote the movement away from meat-based foods.
Brenda LaFleshe, founder of the Sweet Life of A Vegan website, which promotes plant-based recipes, said the group participated in the initiative organized by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to give away the Gardein alternative turkey roasts because she feels animals should not be consumed by humans.

“All animals have sentience, and we believe all animals should have rights,” LaFleshe said Saturday during the giveaway at the corner of Ouellette Avenue and Wyandotte Street.
The idea is to promote a vegan Thanksgiving,” she said. “Thanksgiving gives thanks for all that we have. We think it’s important to choose life.”
PETA focused on Ontario for the Thanksgiving event because Ontario is a top producer of turkeys, the group said in a release.
The Turkey Farmers of Ontario’s website says 85 to 90 million kilograms of turkeys are raised each year in Ontario, representing about 45 per cent of turkey production in Canada
The Thanksgiving vegan turkey roasts represent “something positive for our health, for the environment and for the animal,” said LaFleshe.
Turkey meat tends to be lower in fat and carbohydrates and higher in protein than vegan turkeys, according to nutritional information provided by Healthline.com and the makers of Gardein foods.
Vegan turkey cutlets are produced largely from soya products and they taste like turkey, LaFleshe said. “That’s why vegan … meat is so popular, because you can get the same taste. You don’t have to give up anything.”
Animals consume a lot of grains while they’re growing and that grain could instead be fed directly to humans, she said. “It is our answer for world hunger. We feed 80 billion farmed animals annually across the world.
“There’s only eight billion people. We have enough food for everybody if we eat their food. So we promote that.
“It’s about love, compassion and goodness for all and just trying.”
