A man and a girl have died and two boys have been injured after a single-vehicle crash west of Taree.
Police received a concern for welfare report regarding a man and three children about 1am on Saturday.
“Officers were told the man and children may have been travelling to a relative’s home, when they failed to arrive, police were contacted and commenced an investigation,” police said.
Two hours later, police patrolling The Bucketts Way in Tugrabakh came across an SUV that had left the road and gone down an embankment.
The male driver, aged 45, and an 11-year-old girl were found dead at the scene. Two boys, aged eight and nine, were trapped in the vehicle for some time before they were freed by firefighters and taken to John Hunter Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
“As investigations continue, police are appealing for witnesses, following information the vehicle may have been involved in a minor crash earlier in the region,” police said.
The victims are yet to be formally identified.
