A player on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? has sparked backlash for a huge mistake that cost her £61,000.
Lynn Plowright took part in Jeremy Clarkson’s ITV gameshow on Sunday, and was close to making it all the way to the end.
But choosing not to make use of any of her three remaining lifelines cost her a hefty sum.
As she was quizzed on ‘the last person to hold the title Empress of India’, Lynn admitted: ‘I’ve got £64,000, I’m not confident in using any of the lifelines, so I’m going to go for Mary of Teck and hope for the best.’
Unfortunately, Lynn missed out on the £61,000 available, with Clarkson clarifying that the right answer was ‘Elizabeth, the Queen Mother’.
‘If it makes you feel any better, had you asked me, I would’ve said Victoria,’ Clarkson told her.
‘But listen, you are still going away from here with £64,000, and enjoy paying off your mortgage and your trip to Australia.’
‘Bad luck,’ he added.
Fans were stunned and baffled that Lynn chose not to use any of her remaining life lines, having used the 50:50 on an earlier question.
The player could still have asked Clarkson, asked the audience or phoned a friend.
‘3 lifelines left. Bonkers not to use them !!!!’ viewer @Shelley20 wrote.
‘Why didn’t she use her life lines,’ @TeaforKarin said.
@pengiiplays wrote: ‘She got too cocky, over confident. Shouldve used a life life.’
‘SHE HAD 3 LIFELINES! WTF did she do that for,’ @lukebidder wrote.
‘I don’t feel confident in using my lifelines’ so she just guesses an answer. What an idiot,’ @rebeccahollyxo_ said.
@BobbyGlennie added: ‘Absolute madness there 3 lifelines gone a begging… what a waste.’
Lynn earlier told Clarkson that her winnings could pay off her mortgage and a luxury ticket to travel to Australia.
‘I’ve always wanted to go to Australia but my husband is quite claustrophobic and refused to go that far in economy so maybe I could buy a better ticket and persuade him to come,’ she said.
‘Maybe you can sit on the pilot’s knee with this much money,’ Jeremy laughed back.
Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? airs Sundays at 8pm on ITV1.
