Warner Bros. has discussed its plans for a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy, as the original hits over 30 million copies sold worldwide.
Alongside Elden Ring, Hogwarts Legacy has become one of the most successful single-player games of recent memory.
While Warner Bros. described a sequel earlier this year as ‘one of the biggest priorities’ for ‘a couple of a years down the road’, the company has now confirmed work has actually started on a follow-up.
In a new interview, David Haddad, president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, said development on a sequel is underway, reiterating that it’s a ‘very big priority’ for the company at large.
Will Hogwarts Legacy 2 connect to the Harry Potter TV show?
Haddad said the games team has also been coordinating storytelling elements in Hogwarts Legacy 2 with storylines set to feature in the upcoming Harry Potter HBO TV series, which is set to be a new retelling of the original books.
‘The rest of the company was very curious about what we helped to unlock with Hogwarts Legacy last year,’ Haddad told Variety.
Hogwarts Legacy is set in the 1890s, way before Harry Potter. While it features some characters who are descendants of those in Harry Potter, specifically within the Weasley family, there aren’t any direct relations to the boy wizard himself.
If there is going to be some overlap with the TV show, it’s possible the sequel could jump forward in time and include references to Potter’s grandparents, or explore the birth of Tom Riddle, aka Lord Voldemort in 1926.
As for when we could see an official reveal for the sequel, the Harry Potter TV show is targeting a 2026 date, so it’s possible Warner Bros. is trying to line up the dates.
Since the game’s launch in February 2023, Hogwarts Legacy has sold over 30 million copies worldwide across PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Nintendo Switch. In comparison, the hugely successful Elden Ring surpassed 25 million units in June this year.
Alongside a sequel, Warner Bros. is rumoured to be working on a definitive edition for Hogwarts Legacy with additional DLC. While it hasn’t been officially announced, reports earlier this year suggested developer Rocksteady were helping on the project, with the game’s original developer, Avalanche Software, presumably busy with the sequel.
We might hear more about a potential new version of Hogwarts Legacy at The Game Awards, which is set to take place on December 12.
