Canada West schedules aligned this weekend and the University of Saskatchewan basketball teams and volleyball teams all took on the University of Alberta with mixed results.
The only sweep for the Huskies belonged to the women’s basketball team, who picked up victories on Friday and Saturday while hosting the Pandas..
In its game Saturday, Saskatchewan held a narrow 17-14 lead after the first quarter, but with the help of Gage Grassick’s game-high 30 points, the Huskies went on to claim the 76-49 win.

The night before, the Huskies doubled the Pandas points in both the first and third quarters to win 75-50, with Logan Reider scoring a team-high 21 points for Saskatchewan.
The wins improve Saskatchewan’s record to 4-2 on the season, putting the Huskies in fifth place in the Prairie Division.
Saskatchewan’s men’s basketball team was on the opposite side of the sweep as the Dogs fell in back-to-back games to the Golden Bears.
Alberta led 28-15 after Saturday’s first quarter on their way to an 86-67 victory. Griffen Sharkey had a team-high 18 points for the Huskies.
On Friday night, the Dogs kept things tighter, but were still trailing 34-24 at halftime and it continued into a 73-58 defeat, with Owen Murphy Wiebe leading Saskatchewan with 11 points.
The Huskies are still in search of their first win of the season, sitting with an 0-6 record and 10th place in the Prairie Division.
Travelling to the Golden Bears and the Pandas on the weekend were the volleyball teams, who were both swept by their opponents.
On the men’s side, Saskatchewan were defeated 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 19-25 and 19-25) on Saturday, while falling in three straight sets 23-25, 26-28 and 21-25 on Friday.

Mathieu Methot and Jacob Baird had 11 kills in the latter game to lead the Huskies, while Baird recorded a team-high nine kills the night before as well.
The Huskies now have a 3-3 record and are sixth in Canada West.
Meanwhile, the women’s team suffered a pair of 1-3 losses, falling 17-25, 25-21, 11-25 and 11-25 on Saturday, as well as 17-25, 14-25, 25-22 and 29-31 on Friday.
Taryn Hannah and Ella Milne teamed up to record nine kills for the Huskies in their second game, while Hannah led the team on her own with 14 kills in their first game.
With a 3-5 record, Saskatchewan is ninth in Canada West.
High school volleyball provincials
Sixty per cent of high school provincial volleyball championships wrapped up this weekend as the 1A through 5A girls’ divisions crowned champions as did the boys’ 5A division.
St. Joseph claimed the 5A title on the boys’ side, defeating fellow Saskatoon team Aden Bowman 2-1 (25-11, 18-16 and 11-25), while the girls’ title was captured by Swift Current who swept Balgonie 25-15 and 25-23.
Also in 5A girls, St. Joseph and Holy Cross were defeated in the semifinals and then battled it out for bronze, with Holy Cross coming out on top 2-0.

All of the other girls’ championship games were sweeps by the winning teams with Annaheim winning over LeRoy 25-14 and 25-21 in 1A, Wakaw claiming a 25-14 and 25-20 win against Langham in 2A, Lanigan defeating Carnduff 25-12 and 25-20 in 3A and North Battleford John Paul II securing a 25-13 and 25-15 victory over Melfort in 4A.
