The Daniel Jones era in New York appears to be over.
The lowly New York Giants are benching their starting quarterback, according to multiple reports.
New Jersey native Tommy DeVito, who gave the Giants some brief positive moments last year as an undrafted player, is expected to start Sunday against the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Monday.
While the Giants are framing it as a football decision, Jones has a $23-million injury guarantee in his contract next year if he suffers an injury that keeps him off the field. With the Giants at 2-8 and all but eliminated from playoff contention, there would be risk with keeping Jones on the field.
Picked sixth overall by the Giants in the 2019 NFL Draft, Jones seemed to find momentum in 2022 when he led the Giants to the playoffs and a wild-card win in the first season under new coach Brian Daboll.
That breakout performance led to a four-year, $160-million extension for Jones. However, injuries and poor play haunted Jones in 2023, and his play hasn’t improved this year.
DeVito was 3-3 as a starter last year in his rookie season.
