Google’s first Pixel Tablet was a bit of a mixed bag, but for all its faults, I still like it. It’s also one of two smart home devices I still regularly use (the other is a smart thermostat).
So, it’s sad to read about the planned upgrades Google had for the Pixel Tablet 2 now that it seems like it will never launch. A recent report from Android Authority, via The Verge, digs into several of the planned upgrades slated for the abandoned Pixel Tablet 2. Some of these include a better display, 5G connectivity and more.
Starting with the display, the Pixel Tablet 2 reportedly would have gotten a 10.95-inch LCD display with a 120Hz refresh rate. It would have kept the 2,560 x 1,600 pixel resolution. Reportedly, it also would have had support for an external display up to 4K resolution.
Along with the display upgrades, the Pixel Tablet 2 reportedly would have included the 5G modem from the Pixel series, though it wouldn’t have supported satellite connectivity. It’d also sport a Thread radio, potentially making it compatible with Matter/Thread smart home setups.
Finally, the Pixel Tablet 2 reportedly would have gotten camera upgrades, including an 11-megapixel rear shooter and the same selfie cam as what Google used in the Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
While overall fairly minor upgrades, I do think they would have helped improve the Pixel Tablet experience overall. Would the upgrades have won over more customers? Probably not, which is likely why the whole tablet got canned in the first place. But for the few Pixel Tablet fans out there, these would have been welcome upgrades.
