Sir Cliff Richard’s gravy recipe has been absolutely curdled by top chefs after the crooner dubbed it the ‘probably the best in the world’.
The Young Ones hitmaker, 84, has a peculiar affection for copious amounts of stock cubes and, er, soy sauce in his version of the gloopy delicacy.
The trick to a mind-blowing gravy, Sir Cliff reckons, is to use eight stock cubes of different flavours – including lamb, chicken, beef and vegetable – and mix them with chopped fried onions. Odd, but not awful.
It gets worse. Sir Cliff goes on to add teriyaki, soy and Worcestershire sauce, as well as a sprinkling of gravy powder.
As Holly Willoughby said when Sir Cliff did the demonstration on This Morning a while back: ‘There’s a lot going on isn’t there?’
Now, reflecting on Sir Cliff’s weird gravy recipe, Michelin-starred chef and Pearly Queen oyster bar owner Tom Brown has dubbed it ‘absolutely vile’.
Speaking to The Telegraph after Sir Cliff repeated his brothy business dreams again to Woman’s Weekly, Tom said: ‘I am not really sure what the correlation between teriyaki sauce is and gravy.
‘I am not taking any cooking tips off Cliff Richard anytime soon. It sounds absolutely vile.’
MasterChef semi-finalist Matthew Ryle told the publication it sounds ‘very salty’ and he ‘certainly wouldn’t be pouring it over [his] roast dinner.’
Meanwhile Birmingham-based Michelin-star chef Glynn Purnell warned pop stars should ‘stick to singing songs’.
When making it on This Morning for ex-host Holly and her former ITV co-presenter Philip Schofield, Sir Cliff explained: ‘It was just my own personal taste. Slowly I added one [ingredient], then I liked it.
‘I don’t know it’s the best gravy, but it could be the best gravy in the world,’ he said, adding: ‘I’m thinking of trying to get in contact with a company. You know how Paul Newman has his own thing in America?
‘I thought we could have a Cliff Richard gravy and underneath it should say: “Probably the greatest gravy in the world.””
What was wrong with the classic wine and meat juices, Sir Cliff?
When he’s not slaughtering the best part of Christmas dinner, Sir Cliff is getting all set for his Can’t Stop Me Now tour, kicking off in Australia and New Zealand before landing in Cardiff in November 2025.
He will also perform in Birmingham, Brighton, Bournemouth, and two dates at London’s Royal Albert Hall in December next year.
Over his six-decade career, Sir Cliff – who was modelled as the UK’s answer to Elvis Presley back in the day – has produced hits including Move It, Living Doll, We Don’t Talk Anymore, Mistletoe and Wine, and Summer Holiday.
He is the only singer to have enjoyed the Number 1 top spot in the UK in five consecutive decades.
While we’re sad Sir Cliff doesn’t seem to be releasing a 2025 nautical-themed calendar like he did last year, we’re glad he’s still performing all these decades on.
Just someone please tell him to put the teriyaki sauce down.
