- Emotional tale about love and loss
- Lovely art style and evocative visuals
- Wordless narration and interactive elements
We’ve talked about this heartbreaking tale here before, but Pine: A Story of Loss has finally launched – so brace yourself for an emotional rollercoaster on mobile, Steam and the Nintendo Switch.
Personally, I did get to play this demo for a little bit and felt that less, indeed, is more here. Days pass and seasons change, but some things remain the same – and as for what that is, I suppose you’ll just have to give it a go to find out.
Dubbed an “interactive wordless experience”, Pine: A Story of Loss is a short but impactful journey that will have you stepping into the shoes of a grieving woodworker as he reminisces about his recently deceased wife. The premise alone should be a bit of a trigger warning here – it’s certainly not for everyone, but it’s meant to resonate with those who are equally struggling with grief in more ways than one.
Part point-and-click adventure and part visual novel, the whole narrative is told without the need for any words – as loneliness often is – and as you go through the motions every day, you’ll eventually come to terms with the inevitability of death and the blossoming hope that life gives at the same time.
The core gameplay revolves around small interactive elements, with each one making a lasting statement about overcoming grief. But if you’re on the hunt for something else to satisfy your craving for a good story, why not take a look at our list of the best narrative adventures on Android to get your fill?
