The Mags have bounced back with the release of their debut album, ‘This Is The Mags’.
Evoking 2000s indie nostalgia, the Liverpudlian outfit are making a bold return. Sporting a rough-around-the-edges quality, the band lean into the strengths of their live shows, piecing together gritty riffs with crowd-ready hooks. Best illustrated by spotlight track ’My Girl My Heartache’, the group channel a fresh, rock ’n roll energy, allowing each member to strike through its punchy performance.
First developing their sound as the house band of iconic live music venue Carven Club, The Mags continue to establish themselves across new spaces. Brought together over a period spent in New York City, their latest full-length record embraces a classic feel, merging forces with mainstay collaborators such as Danny ‘Kootch’ Kortchmar (Billy Joel, John Lennon), Will Schillinger (The Beastie Boys, The Ramones), and Grammy-winner Matt Shane (Flight of the Conchords, Elvis Costello).
Offering a rounded introduction to the group, Mike Kennedy shares the messaging behind ‘My Girl My Heartache’: “This track is about the chaotic nature of love. Specifically, young love. It’s about being obsessed with someone, head over heels in love, and when they feel the same you almost merge minds. It’s a beautiful and terrifying position to be in.’ He continues, “Lyrically, this is one of the more ‘poetic’ songs on the album. I’d been listening to a lot of Bunnymen songs at the time, so there’s some fantasy and metaphor at play which rarely appear in The Mags’ material.”
