Growing up in the mountains of Medellin, Colombia, hard work, education and service were instilled in Monica Hernandez at a very young age.
After her mother decided to send her to public school in a “good part” of the city — and near a private university — Hernandez said that move led to obtaining a scholarship at that university, which allowed her to pursue an engineering degree for free.
