With the New Year soon approaching there are many exciting films to look forward to in 2025 but there’s one that stands out overall and one that may be the most anticipated release of the year. James Gunn‘s, ‘Superman’.
A new teaser trailer was released today for the film and Spotlight Report were fortunate enough to have been given early access to view the trailer as well as joining a live Q&A with the director himself, James Gunn.
There are many questions and concerns among DC and Superman fans to do with this film on the basis that this character is cherished by so many and fans want to see their hero accurately represented on screen.
James touched on many aspects about the film and we are pleased to be able to share some of that conversation with you now.
THE FILM IS NOT ANOTHER ORIGIN STORY
Gunn, was clear from the beginning stating: “Everyone knows Superman came from outer space and was adopted. That’s a benefit.”
A lot of people is emotionally attached to the character, as well as Batman and Wonder Woman, “The Big three”. However, people has come to Gunn showing their concerns by sharing they are unable to relate to Superman because he is too powerful, and that is something the director really took into account. That’s why in the teaser Superman is presented differently, even in the part with Krypto telling him “Take me home”, as a way to bring the emotional part of the character and where he is at his most vulnerable state.
SUPERMAN IS DIFFERENT THAN PREVIOUS SUPER HERO FILMS
Known by his style and comedic moments, some fans showed concerns about Gunn’s taking over the worl’s most famous super hero. However, the director explained while ‘Suicide Squad’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ were more like comedies, ‘Superman’ at its core is different.
“When yuo show to people some cuts and tehy laugh, get scared or cry, you get something…for Superman is all about the characters, the action, its tonally different” Gunn said. “…Superman, is in a lot of ways an outsider, he is an alien from another planet” he added.
DAVID CORENSWET AS SUPERMAN
James expresses his praise for actor David Corenswet going on to convey how determined and dedicated he was to this role.
David worked incredibly hard in the gym, studied for the role through reading Superman comic books and it was recently discovered that David was the one to talk James into giving Superman his red trunks.
David said something along the lines of “I’m an alien who can fly, shooting laser from my eyes, so I want kids to not be afraid of me” .
RACHEL BROSNAHAN AS LOIS LANE
James explains that his Lois Lane is a reporter who is very much a journalist who believes in the truth at any cost.
The romance between Lois and Superman in the Donner films is a key element that James wanted to bring across. He wants the audience to see why Superman loves her.
They wanted a Lois who was going to have a great on screen dynamic with Superman and they saw that in Rachel and David.
NICHOLAS HOULT AS LEX LUTHOR
It’s explained that it was very important to make a version of Lex that is very much on an equal playing field with Superman.
The audience needs to be afraid of Lex to understand the true gravity of the character and what’s at stake.
Gunn explained that his intelligence and the way he handles his henchmen are enough for you to see how scary of a character he can be: “When Lex and Superman go head to head, there are no rules.”
KRYPTO
Krypto has been confirmed as a pivotal part of the film, and te beloved super-pet is inspired by Gunn’s own dog “Ozu”.
“He (Ozu) s the worlds’ worst pet” (Gunn joked), he is a rescue dog, and destroyed all my stuff when we got him home. He served as my inspiration.
FILM SCORE
As heard in the teaser trailer the decision has been made to use the original Superman theme, composed by John Williams, but with a modern day twist.
James explained that he wanted to use that original theme from the get go and as soon as the script was finished he passed it onto composer John Murphy, explaining his vision and what he wanted out of the scoring for the film.
While James Gunn is known for using a lot of pop songs in his previous films, he explained that music is incredibly important and for ‘Superman’ it’s all about the score.
Overall, ‘Superman’ sounds like it’s going to be a blockbuster and one to leave fans satisfied. It’s great to hear that everyone involved has been dedicated and hard at work to bring us a great piece of cinema.
We can’t wait to see ‘Superman’ in cinemas from July 2025.
